Lennon's original lyrics unsold

John Lennon's hand-written lyrics for the Beatles classic A Day In The Life have failed to sell at auction. The double-sided sheet written 39 years ago had been expected to fetch £1.5m in sealed bids at Bonhams in New York, but the offers failed to meet the reserve. Lennon wrote the song after reading about the death of his friend, Guinness heir Tara Browne, in the Daily Mail. It became the final track on the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album and was sold for £56,600 in 1992. A Bonhams spokesman said: "It's a reality in our business but we're certainly disappointed." He added: "We wish we were jumping on the rooftops yelling about the sales prices."
